Straight staircases take a standard rail that can usually be fitted within a day; curved or landing staircases need a custom-built rail measured to the exact stairs, which takes longer to source and fit.
A ramp that's too steep is often more dangerous than the step it replaces — building guidelines generally call for a gentle 1:12 slope (roughly one metre of ramp length for every 10cm of rise), though a steeper 2:12 slope can work over shorter distances where garden or hallway space is tight.
